MOJI Organises Indonesia's University Volleyball League Itself: LVM 2026 and the Gap Vietnam Has Not Filled

On 25 September 2026, the organisers of Liga Voli Mahasiswa 2026 held the group-stage draw in Jakarta. Twelve days later, on 7 October 2026, the first whistle blew in Yogyakarta. That gap was the entire preparation window for 36 volleyball teams from 24 Indonesian universities.

The body behind the competition is not Persatuan Bola Voli Seluruh Indonesia, the national volleyball federation. It is MOJI, a digital sports media platform owned by the Emtek group, working alongside Vidio, the streaming platform inside the same ecosystem. They organise it, they produce it, they broadcast it, and they own the product.

People call me a shock merchant, but I only say what others have not dared to say: a 60-match national volleyball competition built by a media company rather than a federation is a louder signal than any transfer deal this month.

Structure and what has been announced

LVM 2026 features 36 teams, 18 men's and 18 women's, drawn from 24 universities. Three host cities: Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Jakarta. Each city takes six men's and six women's teams, split into two pools of three per gender. Sixty matches in total, spread across 15 competition days between 7 October and 31 October 2026.

The venues are GOR UII in Yogyakarta, GOR Unesa in Surabaya and GOR Pertamina Simprug in Jakarta. In Yogyakarta and Surabaya, matches run from 13:00 to 19:00 Western Indonesian Time. Jakarta runs an outlier window: 11:00, 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00.

The prize pool is called uang pembinaan, literally development money, not commercial prize money. Each gender shares 25 million rupiah across four placings: 10 million for the champion, 7.5 million for the runner-up, 5 million for third, 2.5 million for fourth. In hard currency, winning Indonesia's largest national university volleyball competition in 2026 is worth roughly USD 620.

The official motto: Kampus sebagai panggung baru, campus as the new stage.

What is actually being sold here

MOJI is not selling prize money. It is selling audience, and it does so by manufacturing the content instead of buying rights from somebody else. This is vertical integration: one entity both organises the event and controls the distribution channel.

Banardi Rachmad, MOJI's Deputy Director of Programming, appears in the announcement as its spokesperson. He is not a technical official of the federation. That detail tells you how the event will be measured: by views, by average watch time, by new Vidio subscriptions. On-court quality is a means, not the end.

The schedule maths is tight. Each city holds 12 teams across four pools of three. Every three-team pool produces three round-robin matches; with placement games, each city stages roughly 20 matches over five days, four per day. Each team plays very little. This is a design that prioritises reach and exposure over competitive depth.

The most telling detail is the Jakarta window. Pushing the first match to 11:00 while the other two cities start at 13:00 reflects a facility constraint: GOR Pertamina Simprug has to share its calendar. For a university event, that is ordinary. For a media product aimed at prime time, it is an unresolved problem.

A competition designed for viewers will schedule around viewers. LVM 2026 does not yet, and that immaturity is real, not inferred.

Based on my experience watching matches across regional competitions, the gap between a well-organised event and a well-watched event usually sits in small operational details like this, not in the standard of play.

In Vietnam, broadcast rights for major volleyball competitions are typically bought by a television station or a distribution partner, while organising sits with the federation. The value chain splits into two blocks, and most commercial value lands in the distribution block. Indonesia has inverted that by letting the distribution block make its own content. This is the core difference, and it is why I am tracking LVM 2026 more closely than a university event normally deserves.

Against the regional backdrop, Indonesia's move has clear logic. At the 2026 Asian Games, the Indonesian women's team finished sixth, beat Vietnam 3-0, and lost to Japan and Chinese Taipei. That position makes a youth pipeline a structural requirement rather than an aspiration. LVM 2026 is a systemic answer to that gap.

The contrarian angle: where I could be wrong

Wrong if I read this as a turning point. I am 49 and still believe a single sentence can change a season, but a sentence does not build a volleyball nation. LVM 2026 may be the first edition and the only one. There is no seeding, no head-to-head data, no player names published. We are looking at a platform, not yet a competition.

Wrong if I apply my own yardstick to someone else. I lost two sponsors in 2026, and I learned that the truth also needs a decent coat. Indonesia has chosen a very good coat for this event: national stage, media reach, campus story. But the largest uang pembinaan is 10 million rupiah per gender, about USD 620. The media framing far outstrips the material value, and that expectation gap will show from season two.

Wrong if I skip the power question. A competition owned by a media company and run alongside a national federation's system raises the issue of who recognises whom. The relationship between MOJI and PBVSI is not stated anywhere. If LVM recurs and expands, it could become the de facto national university championship, and the absence of formal recognition would then become a risk rather than a footnote.

One more variable: October 2026 overlaps the Asian Games cycle. A young university event must compete for attention with its own national team.

What to watch

A testable prediction: whether an LVM 2027 season is announced before June 2027. If it is, the media-as-organiser model has proven its sustainability and Southeast Asian volleyball gains a precedent worth studying. If not, we have just watched a content campaign wearing a competition's clothes.

The stadiums were empty in 2026, but I never heard the fans more clearly. That sound no longer needs a grandstand; it needs a streaming platform and a competition to watch. The ESFJ in me wants to please, but the hot-take in me chooses to wake people up.

For Vietnamese volleyball administrators, the test lies elsewhere: who will be the first to hand over part of their stage to an entity they did not appoint?
